Three of us went to Masal. The waiter took long time to bring the order, forgot our tea and was never to be seen again. We had to fetch another waiter to get us the check and get us water, whom brought us 2 instead of 3 (at least he tried.) We paid at the front and didn't tip since his absence couldn't even be counted as service!! The spinach pie was eh ok. I've had better.

Wonderful relaxing place across from the bay and serving great desserts and light meals. Authentic Turkish specialties and great tres leche cake.

I decided to visit this place because of the recommendation given to me by my girlfriend. I didn't regret it. The place is know for their baked stuffed potato and it is honestly AMAZING! It tastes like heaven. It is perfectly made. With a perfect combination of warm stuffed potato and other ingredients such as olives, this product on their menu is classified to be the best that they have. I defiantly recommend visiting the place to try it :) You can also sit outside during good weather with the bay breeze in front of you.. Defiantly a nice place! The place can get crowded at times but I'm not surprised because it is highly anticipated because of the quality of their food :)

Another good find, thanks to Yelp! Trying to find a brunch spot on a whim in Sheepshead Bay, Masal came up, so off we went! It was a beautiful day so my friend and I decided to sit outside and nosh on some good Turkish eats. We ordered a pot of Turkish tea, the premium Turkish breakfast, a flat spinach pie, and a flat cheese pie (clearly we were feeling indulgent). Everything was absolutely delicious and so fresh! The premium Turkish breakfast was massive, and can easily feed two people. Warning: MUST LOVE CHEESE. And man do my friend and I love cheese. Both the spinach and cheese pies were very good and not a single bit was left unconsumed. Overall, I was very impressed with both quality and quantity of the food, not to mention the great prices. Though the outdoor seating area isn't too large, the restaurant itself is. Inside, it's huge and almost diner-looking, but still nice. The only reason this review isn't five stars is because the service was a bit on the slow side, but we weren't in a rush so it didn't matter much.

Been there several times, it's my spot for a premium Turkish breakfast on a Sunday, in summers I sit outside and enjoy the canal and the vibrant community. The only con is the service, while its very friendly, it's very slow. In summery, this is a very good place for a breakfast or evening coffee/tea with some desert.

This Cafe got a new life after the renovation. New menu is great and the food is done well. This is a gray place for a dessert or a quick light meal!

So once i walked into this place its pretty much Eye Candy. Everything looks so delicious and i was told it really was. I may not have the same taste as everyone else!. After a horrible dinner my best friend took me here to get some dessert. Unfortunately i'm lactose so most of the dessert they have was full of dairy except for the fruits which defeat the purpose of getting fruit from this place. I decided to take a chance an purchase a Moose dessert that was shaped like a Triangle.. While i was waiting one of the Workers was talking to a beautiful blond girl and most not notice i was behind him because he stepped on my foot so hard to this day it is still black and blue. I screamed so loud and almost cried i swear to everyone i love i almost slapped the crap out this guy... He apologize and instead of offering me ice for my food him and all his coworkers laughed.. I took my dessert home so i can put ice on my foot and enjoy a good movie while eating my Moose dessert, once i took one bite it wasn't my cup of tea. personally didn't enjoy it but i would try again just incase it was just a bad day for me.

Sunday was my first time here for brunch. We ordered the baked potato and sherpereds pie, toast, iced tea and an hot tea for our meal and it was delicious. The service was great. The waitresses were attentive. The decor is beautiful. The dessert was yummy and pretty unique. I will be coming back more often!

Very good experience. Service 5 out of 5 stars, the server was friendly, prompt and courteous. No waiting needed and we arrived around 3 pm. Specifically enjoyed the Turkish coffee. Nothing was over seasoned which was a big plus. What stuck out the most was how fast the food arrived from order to table. First experienced went great. Compliments to the chef and the kind waitress that served us. 9/4/2015 3:30 PM. Dishes ordered: Turkish coffee Flat Spinach pie Beef and lamb kofte Turkish Stuffed potato Dessert: kunefe

Excellent turkish food! When I first moved to the area, this place was known as the dessert place to go. So the first couple of times I went in, it was for dessert. High quality no matter what you try. The last time I went in with my Turkish roommate for what was described to me as the best stuffed baked potato ever. It certainly did not disappoint. It was cooked well, with sausage, mustard, ketchup, black and green olives, sour cream.... a big old piece of heaven. I ate the entire thing! I also had the turkish coffee which was great, and pretty standard turkish coffee (nothing like regular coffee just in case you don't realize the strength to this coffee). The furniture is fantastic, and ambience is lively. Most of the times I've been here the place has been busy, but I haven't had to wait long for a table. The wait staff is great coming to take your order, decent when bringing out your food, but when you are finished and ready to pay the bill, not one to be found. It was the most odd thing. But you shouldn't let that deter you from trying the food.

Located near the water in Sheepshead Bay is an unexpected gem. I'm often wary of restaurants with gimmicks, and Masal does have an old fashioned car out front giving the place a somewhat circus like appearance from the outside. However, once you go in there are gorgeous mosaic tiles, beautiful lamps hanging from the ceilings and comfortable seats waiting to greet you. I was only there for dessert with my girlfriend and Win C. so this review will only focus on those portions of the menu. Our host was very nice and we were seated promptly. Our waiter came to us quickly. He seemed a bit tired and frazzled, but still was very courteous. Service was good during the evening though there were some oddities, nothing bad per se, but one thing that struck me as odd was when we asked for a water refill we got a whole new glass of water instead of having water poured from a pitcher. Again, nothing "bad" or worth complaining about, but it was idiosyncratic enough that I thought I'd mention it here. We couldn't just decide on one thing so we ordered several dishes. Here's what we had: DESSERT SAMPLER The small version of this came with six different items. I admit I didn't catch the name of every item, but I can say the Baklava with Pistachio was really tasty and had a nice chew. I also loved the Pistachio roll (notice a theme?). The other items were good, but not quite as sweet as I would have liked (including the fig, which surprised me). Still, this is a great way to try several different desserts to see what you would like to get more of in the future. 3 CHOCOLATE MOUSSE CAKE Featuring white and dark chocolate mousse, this was a very light cake. You'd think it would be thick and almost like fudge from looking at it, but I was very pleasantly surprised at how soft it was, and how the sweetness was at just the right level. I've had better chocolate cake before, but it was a solid slice. KUNEFE This was the grand prize winner of the "best dessert" item during my visit. A crust made from long thin noodle threads is baked with cheese and simple syrup is added in to create one of the best desserts I've ever eaten. Both the outer edge and the top of this dessert are crispy, then the middle and cheese add some amazing soft chewiness. The result is a mash up of savory and sweet with crispy and chewy textures. This was my favorite of the evening. I also got to have the Turkish Coffee, which was nice and rich tasting. I had it without any milk or sugar to get the full flavor and it was great! I'd happily come back here for dessert any time and I look forward to trying their regular food in the future as well!

Long story short... In btwn okay and good. Service sucks. I would've given it 2 stars for service. You got one guy employee on a hover board/ sky walker weaving through the restaurant. The waitresses aren't consistent. They didnt check on our table at least once, and when they did they barely spoke loud enough to understand. They also gave me silverware that had gum on its handle. Masal, get it together.

Get a Turkish tea here and savor it in the beautiful interior. The service staff, however, could be a bit quicker and get orders right more often.

They have tables outside to sit and enjoy the summer atmosphere. Their servers are always nice, smiling and polite. Their food is not so great, the pasta definitely not good. But the kumpir (baked potato) is one of the best in the area. They have fresh orange juice, tea, coffee, etc. So I recommend this place for drinks and dessert and a nice conversation.

I was here with friends tonight for desserts. Been here for few times for desserts and I love it every time. The place is nice and comfortable. It opens until very late which is good for summer time. About the food, since I only had desserts here so I'll only talk about desserts, I had powder tea (Apple flavor) today, it taste very good but a bit too sweet especially since we are eating desserts with it. We ordered the "3 chocolate mousse cake" (white & dark chocolate mousse cake), the assorted Turkish pastry desserts. It was good but didn't give me the wow factor, but this Kunefe dessert we ordered, it gave us the wow factor, it's a cheese dessert, it was very sweet, it was warm/hot. And I remember I had the lemon sobert in summer time once, it was tasty and refreshing, I'll definitely have it again when it's warmer out. Overall, I think it's a very good place for dessert if you are in the area. Trust me, it won't disappoint you!!

Finally we've found Turkish style waffle! It was really good at that usa rate, i mean that better than nothing :) if waffle's dough was thinner, it could be perfect. Service and behaviors of servers were very cool. By the way they should have white chocolate for waffle. Shortly i liked this place and i'll be back ASAP !

This place is a mess! Went there yesterday for the first time and never going back again! Extremely slow service. Had to wait for table for 20 minutes, and then another 15 minutes to place an order. I asked for check, but never got it. Had to pay in front. Ordered Shepherd salad and couldn't even eat it: tomatoes were unripe. Very cheap quality of food! Wouldn't recommend going there, this place doesn't even deserve one star!!!

I go regularly to Masal Cafe for week end brunch. Good food, never crowdy and staff very nice. Definitely recommend for brunch. Enjoy

Very nice place, especially in the summer because they have sits outside. I live in that area, so very often we are going there for the breakfast. Enjoying atmosphere and good food. Sometimes they have problems with the service, but it happens rare and we are coming back all the time. They have a huge selection of desserts which is very nice.

  • Victoria T.

I've come here a lot over the last six years and the place has declined as time went on. One major problem here is that they hire 10-20 waitresses, who all stand around socializing rather than doing their jobs. I've had food and menus slammed or dropped onto the table in front of me, seen eye-rolls when attempting to call someone over, had to wait ridiculous amounts of time to receive the menu and the check, and was given the wrong bill multiple times. The food itself is pretty good (they upgraded the menu a few years ago to make it very user-friendly), and the environment is a nice one to lounge around in (they generally let people hang around for as long as they want.) The main problem is the staff.

  • Alex A.

We always go there when we want to get a group of different minded friends together. The place is louder than usual, good food and desert selection. Tea and coffee are all good. Service can be a little more professional, but knowing the business, we could have just lucked out on a good waitress.

Went there with my girlfriend recently to have some desserts and tea. Guess what? You are not allowed to hug or kiss in there. Are you kidding me?!! They sent a waiter to us and gave us a check right away. Unpleasant experience. Never again!

  • Nat K.

I have been going to this place for over 4 years and in the past year this place has changed and not for the good. The waiters barely speak English and always disappear. We ordered 3 kumpir (baked potatoe) waited 40 mins for it and only got 2. Ordered a water and somehow got rasberry tea. When we were ready for the check the our waiter was no where to be found and someone else brought it to us. If it wasn't for Mt favorite coppa spagnola I wouldn't consider returning to this place ever again !!

Good food and service. Really enjoyed time spent there. Welcoming waiters and waitresses made my experience even better.

  • Khurshed A.

We were three people and we ordered and told them to bring food after 15-20 minutes. And they bring food separate, they suppose to bring food in the same time for everyone. And we waited for 40-45 minutes for just one ravioli.

  • Ellana G.

I don't like tea, but I like Masal's teas. In and of itself, that pretty much explains all. Not much else is needed to say, aside from Masal is amazing and the potato salad is not weird and is worth a try at least once... a week.

  • Leo K.

Pretty good spot overall 3.5 They have nice indoor and outdoor seating, though the service is not the greatest, but hey its Emmons Ave so I don't expect much in this area for service. Coffee and tea is pretty good and the desserts are delicious. They have a nice selection of all types of food, no complaints about any of the food I ever ate here. The main things worth trying here is the stuffed potato, very filling, very delicious and very original. This is the only place I have ever seen serve this. It's basically olivie salad (cucumber, meat etc) stuffed over the potato. Addictive For dessert, don't miss out on the Kunefe, it's just about my favorite desert ever, and if you love cheese, sweet and crispy this will satiate all. If you want a nice chill place to have a coffee and a snack on Emmons, this is a good spot

The best Turkish coffee in the neighborhood! that's all I can say about this place. I did not like the food and it was really hot inside.

  • Anna S.

The food is great but I can honestly say that the customer service is absolutely awful. The waitress/waiter is never around when you need them. You will spend the majority of your time at Masal trying to hunt your waitress down to take your order or to bring you the check. The baked potato is to die for!!

    (2)
  • Ali C.

So bad! You have to get something if you want to sit a bit more with your loved one.. Oh and you are also not allowed to hug each other.. Its prohibited (!) They will send waiters and disturb you and your space..

So I just tried Masal Cafe in Brooklyn this evening and I was pleasantly surprised by its great food/atmosphere! Located next to Sheepshead Bay, Masal Cafe offers a casual and authentic dinning experience, and features a menu mostly made of up Turkish cuisine. Colorful and full of energy, Masal is a great spot with friends or family. Menu items to try when you visit include: -Shepard Salad (huge, healthy, extremely satisfying) -Spinach Pie (Turkish version of a quesadilla) -Stuffed Potato (stuffed is understatement...loaded in flavor/savoriness, it's a must try for sure!) -Napoleon (incredible pastry dessert drizzled with caramel, and served with whipped cream) The only thing lacking here was the service. Not terrible, but not great either. Seems like the staff is either untrained or has absolutely no system when waiting on tables. Not to mention, we had at least 5 different staff members wait on us and none of them seemed to communicate to each other about what we actually needed/wanted/already had. Let me stress though, our order did come out quickly and was correct, but like in many previous reviews, the staff just seemed inefficient/awkward overall. Probably the only reason holding me back from giving Masal 5 out of 5 Though, service aside, I definitely look forward to coming back to Masal Cafe in the near future, recommending them to friends/family, and trying out the hookah next door at the Cherry Hill Market afterwards!!

Cane here for the first time after Sandy and was surprised to see that the place changed a lot. Although there are only a few tables in the place, the waiter took 20 minutes to actually come to out table and take the order. Ordered three baked potatoes, not very complicated order right? Wrong! They brought two. And when we asked where the rest of our order is, the waiter shrugged and left. Basically, very disappointed with the service and the quality of the food. Doubt that we will be coming here again.

    (2)
  • Eugene K.

This is a pretty good place considering it's among the worse places that one can find himself while being in South Brooklyn. You might stumble on a waiter who does not spell English well, but everyone is in good nature and will be very helpful.

    (4)
  • Michael K.

Pros: Excellent food, good decor, calm atmosphere, Turkish cuisine. Cons: Crowded on weeknights and weekends. Expect slow service if you come during peak hours. No lamb shish, only chicken kebabs. Other: The crowd is mostly middle-to-high-class Russian, so don't be surprised/feel alienated because everyone is speaking in fluent Russian. Brighton Beach is only a stone's throw away, and Opera might be the only decent cafe for miles.

Great food and atmoshpere fast service and friendly staff. I visited here many times I would recommend the tiramisu it is amazing. The prices are reasonable. I highly recommend stopping by for breakfast lunch dinner or just for tea and dessert.

  • Ro C.

Been here twice and I'm a fan. Authentic turkish coffee and tea. Prices are cheap- my boyfriend and I had 2 coffees, 2 teas, and split a dessert and the bill was less than $20. The place is spacious and service was actually really accommodating. My only gripe is that the seating area to bathroom ratio is awfully low thus one star off. Good place to people-watch and pass the time if you're in the Sheepshead Bay area.

  • Anastasia Z.

I have been to Masal a few times. The place is something like a tea house. There is actually a menu, but as far as I know the food is mostly breakfast like. As many times as I was there sitting outside and inside, I haven't once seen somebody eating a meal. It is either breakfast, tea, coffee, or desserts. I should say desserts are usually nice and fresh. My favorites are Kunafa and Napoleon. Masal is an ok place to have tea with friends on a budget. Areas to improve: plastic furniture outside should be washed at least occasionally, service is ...oh, well. Advantages: very affordable (Turkish diner :) )

    (3)
  • Meir Z.

Went on sat night and hmmmm not impressed Service was very slow, I ask for mint leaf for my tea she stated that she will ask the kitchen but returned with no mint and no explanation as if she forgot to even ask, the " knaffe" ( Turkish desert ) was less then eatable, and the " creme brûlée " was a blue berry dish that I have never seen before. To sum it up I will not be back...

    (1)
  • Frank S.

Cool Turkish cafe with lots of tea and desert offerings. Their kumpir (staffed potato with vegetables and sausage) is my favorite. Baklava and Turkish tea are fantastic!

    (5)
  • Serkan T.

It's apparently not a place to go. Like most Turks go there because there is no alternatives which is not true. I am not going to advertise them here :) It is a cafe but no tolerance for chatting and sitting a while. Discomforting people and bad management. Don't go!

    (1)
  • Yael S.

good desserts, but the baklava is pretty drowned in honey. go for the white profiteroles or the creme brûlée. they're my favorites here.

    (3)
  • Bianna S.

The desserts and hot drinks here are amazing and have a very big variety. The cappuccino I ordered was good, better than most places. The tiramisu was really good; fresh and soft and it just melts in your mouth. Nice place to come drink a cup of coffee with dessert with your friends.

    (4)
  • Anthony B.

I like this place for the tea, it is also a good place to sit and chat with friends to get out from under the rain. To be quite frank I do not really order any food here because I don't want to be let down by it.

  • Emre H.

Masal is one of my favorite place. I just had amazingly delicious gullac which is a traditional Ramadan' milky sweet with traditional Turkish tea. Waitresses are extremely friendly and the place had outdoor seats also.. Happy to visit Masal 3-4 times a week by emmons bay

    (5)
  • Katya V.

The only thing that is good here is the Turkish tea. The service is terrible, you have to wait 20 min before they come to you. They don't listen to you and do not speak English. Think twice before going there!

    (2)
  • Cathy S.

I would give more stars but every single time I have gone here, the service was atrocious. I am a generous tipper but I have found myself leaving this cafe leaving as little as $1 or even, in the worst cases, nothing more than the food cost. The food, drinks, and desserts are usually very good so it's a shame that the people behind Masal won't hire competent workers. I always hope I'll be proven wrong whenever I come by, but I am always disappointed. It should not take 15 minutes for the check to come and it should not take an additional 20 minutes for the workers to remember to charge it and bring it back. It doesn't take an astrophysicist to remember to bring a glass of water after writing it down on the order paper, but even this is too much for the workers at Masal. Perhaps I would be more apologetic if the waiters acknowledged their faults and apologized for their neglect and appallingly slow service. Self awareness, however, is another trait the staff is horribly lacking.

okay, so this has to be my favorite breakfast spot. i can go everyday and not get bored. i just love their breakfasts! even around 11pm-2am in the spring/summer evenings. Sit around outside with your best friends and drink tea all night and have a midnight snack. the staff are completely friendly. they always have a smile on their faces as they welcome you inside.

Insane loaded potato! But why only 2 breakfast options? I used to go a lot but lack of variety made me go less.

The last time I was here it was January (right after Sandy hit) and they had a new look and everything. I came here right after my last class because I've been dying for some hot Turkish tea, and they redecorated the entire place again! Like wow? Nice! Me and my boyfriend sat at the back because he wanted to watch the football game (soccer). It's a very European atmosphere, most of the customers are Russian, but the food is Turkish. Its more of a European cafe' so don't expect huge entrees, but I did noticed a pasta menu for the first time. I mostly come here for the sweets and relaxing tea. The service is pretty slow, but thats pretty much the point because its a European cafe' with a European atmosphere. Don't' come here in a rush, just sit, sip some tea, eat some baklava, and absorb the relaxing sleepy atmosphere. Its so worth it. They do have plenty of seating outside just as much as they do from the inside. I was a bit surprised to see a few people actually sitting outside so late at night in the chilly Autumn air, especially since the water is right across the street. Too bad I never experienced this place during the Summer time, but I don't think I can honestly sit outside in the heat, have people watching what I eat, and look at traffic passing by. The bay is right across from you, but still...cars are in the way. I guess it depends on the time, like I would say avoid rush hour because the drivers around Sheepshead Bay and Manhattan Beach are nuts! It was pretty busy for a Wednesday night, I guess even during the cold nights at Sheepshead Bay everyone wants tea and desserts. I had myself a large Turkish tea, a small order of a dessert sample which consist of baklava, and other Turkish sweets that I can't even remember honestly. It was good enough for me and my boyfriend. But their was this one thing I must try that I've been dying to try for a very long time...Kumpir. Its a HUGE.STUFFED.BAKED.POTATO. I mean...HUGE! It could be good enough for 4-6 people, unless you have a big appetite! It has your typical Russian salad, with ketchup, mayo, sausage is extra. The waitress says with sausage is good so we went for it. The potato itself is honestly pureed, its so creamy and soft! Especially with the cheese inside is just a warm, melty, heavenly taste. You have to try it one day, but make sure to have Turkish tea with it. It was just too good, and we couldn't finish in one sitting. Especially because it was late and we didn't want to stuff ourselves like the potato itself. I've always loved this place, maybe I'll bring my laptop one day and study my school work here. Who knows, most likely I'll fall asleep after sipping Turkish tea and stuffing myself with sweets. Don't forget to try the baked rice pudding! It comes in a ceramic bowl and its just soooo good and sweet! I need to come here more often but I'm afraid it will get to me eventually.

It's places like this that will ensure I give up desserts. With no apologies to Long Island, I'm always suspicious of menus that have pictures describing the food. Now, I can understand their need to explain less popular (in the US) Turkish desserts like Tulumba, or a Kemal Pasha but not so much for chocolate or strawberry ice cream...... what's amusing is that the online menu lacks pictures for the Turkish desserts, but has those for "Italian" ones. Thankfully, the printed menus make no such omission. Conceptually, this seems like a great idea: water-front out door seating, Russian/Italian and Turkish desserts (and calorie bombs like the Kumpir: baked potato stuffed with cheese and x ,000 calories), large seating area... but the execution is completely gutted by excessive sugar in the Turkish desserts, and apathetic service. All of the desserts I tried: Pistachio Baklava, Fig dessert, Kemal Pasha (distant cousin of the Indian/Pakistani: Gulab Jamun) - were way way too sweet and drenched in syrup. I would instead recommend the Russian desserts like the Smetannik cake, or the gelato based desserts (Bombas, Coppas...) I'm not usually one to blast service, but it's featured in all the reviews for a reason. I had enough time available waiting for a server, on two separate occasions, to debate whether these folks were (a) under-compensated; (b) undergoing medical complications; (c) facing immigration process delays; (d) the inadequately trained cast of a foreign reality show: Swap my Career. The most redeeming aspect of my experience was the Cappuccino... yet, I waited 15 minutes to catch the eyes of any of the dozen odd servers for another one, only to give up and instead stand up to ask for the bill. I bear no malice to anyone (least of all towards a dessert focused cafe!!), but the owner(s) should worry that these clowns will drive away future business...

Just how slow is the service at Masal cafe? I walked in freshly shaved and walked out with a beard. Seriously, get it together folks.I am all for laid back, chill places, but this here takes it to a whole new level. You can catch a movie at the theater nearby in between your stay. All joking aside, the signature baked potato is tasty. The pastries and cakes are excellent and they offer much variety. Granted, the cafe does get very busy on weekends. However, them sweets are already prepped and you're not starting out from scratch by sifting the flour and separating the egg yolks. It's no excuse for the tumultuous delays.

A different turkish food experience compared to other turkish places in the area. Masal is more for the person who wants to sit down outside sidewalk, sip tea for hours while watching the action on the bay. The food is decent and relatively light with less meat options compared to traditional turkish restaurants. Has a large indoor space in a prized architectural jewel of sheepshead bay! Con: service is slow. The decor is questionable to say the least.. The multiple turkish airline planes hanging from the side of the walls is a head scratcher.

Fantastic place! I've come to Masal since '03 when it was barely the size of a closet & it has grown! Throughout the years of growth; the menu, seating, lighting & decor has changed many times. Yet through that change, there has always been a consistency in quality & attention to the customer.

I've been here a few times. The service is horrible. The first time I've been here, the waitress never bothered to bring any menus. Me and my friends sat there for almost half an hour until we said something. The waitress also forgot some of our food that we ordered. I asked to speak to the manager and the guy who came out didn't even look like the manager and didn't care about what I had to say. The stuffed baked potato here is good but nothing else. The spinach and potato pie are not so good. The desserts are not worth the money considering how little they give. The waitress doesn't even come around to see if we are okay or wanted anything else. She didn't even refill our water and the glass was empty. I walked out still thirsty. The waitress doesn't even bring the bill. We sat there for hours until we said something. I don't think I'll be coming back here.

Service is incredibly slow and the food is alright. The only redeeming quality is the ambiance. It is right on the water.

Great food and atmosphere! We love the Turkish tea and cheese gozleme :) it gets a bit crowded in the evening but great for breakfast and afternoon tea! We go here every week and love it more every time!!! Awesome place :) highly recommend

Went for the first time at lunch. Perfect menu for that. We had the chicken kofta, which included a salad and the premium Turkish breakfast. Everything was delicious and plentiful for three. Service was good, though at times a little slow. That's ok when you are sitting outside enjoying the view and the weather. Will be back.

A great place for a lazy summer morning. We love to sit outside sipping coffee or Turkish tea and eating one if their spinach or cheese pies. The service can be spotty, but the beverages and the atmosphere make up for it.

Before it used to be a catastrophic gem. Now it is KATASTROPHE! The servers aimlessly wander around, never re-filling your water, unsure of your order, you get an order that was requested by patrons three tables down, and your food is lurking in the unknown. Of course Russians will patronize this, wretched service, with a "new chic decor" ( read lame) and mindless waitresses who will show you the time of your life for anything comparable to a J1 Visa. Skip this place unless you want to be courting a foreign bride. Let me note the following, any 4+ reviews of this place are from morons who clearly don't leave the premises of the Brighton Beach/sheepshead bay area. Also semi fluent attacks from owner and his friends won't help me bump up my 1 star rating. What a Joke!

Terrible, terrible service - consistently so. It's become almost an added attraction - we normally place bets as to how long, tedious, and frustrating the experience will be, and it turns out that the suspense goes well with their admittedly great food.

I love coming to Masal, I've been coming here for the past 6 years. It only gets better every time. Waffles, pastas, desserts, and many more selections of foods. Great place to relax hangout with friends. The staff is very friendly and fast service.

The weather was amazing and we LOVED the outdoor seating. Food: Overall, the food was quite good. Everything was fresh and flavorful. We had the sheperd's salad which was a great portion of salad with a nice amount of cheese on top (I hate it when restaurants skimp on the cheese and Masal certainly didn't) We also enjoyed the kumpir which was great to try, it was a HUGE baked potato stuffed with cheese, Russian olive salad, olives, and sausage. We also had the manti which were GREAT. Amazing small bites of lamb in a delicate dough and swimming in a delicious sauce. LOVED it. Great meal followed by some Turkish tea. Service: Service was good especially when you take into account that it was a o busy day when everyone wanted to sit outside. Masal is definitely a great neighborhood staple and I cannot wait to try their Turkish Breakfast next time.

It is nice place. But servers are slow. One time i was waving my hand really high to get attention of any waitresses. But they were talking each others. Today i ordered a soufle with ice cream. After a while i realized that there is a plate with icecream on the counter. Almost five minutes later my soufle came which is the one on the counter with icecream. And it was totally melted. I should have take a picture. But i said immediately i wont eat that. Because it was like icecream-soufle soup. And the waitress was not so helping. She insisted that how it is supposed to be. Then she bring it back to counter. Then another girl brought a nice looking soufle with ice cream. I like this place. But they need to work on to manage the cafe better. This is a place i want to sit and relax. But this things happen a lot.

Wish the place had a points card, as I end up there a lot. Love the huge baked potatoes which can be stuffed to your liking. Great Shepherd's salad, with just the right amount of spices. Favorite desserts are figs stuffed with cream and nuts and kadaif ( I always ask for the extra crispy one), great iced Turkish tea.

I adore Masal. I've been here many times and loved it. The atmosphere is cozy and cute, and the service is nice. The menu offers very good Turkish food, as well as desserts and beverages, at a somewhat-costly price. My favorite food here would have to be the 'Kumpir', considering it offers a lot for the price. It could fill me up very well. However, despite the great food, I always come here for the delicious desserts. Masal's lovely 'Bombas' are fantastic treats. I usually order varied chocolate 'Bombas' (such as the Dream Bomba). The dessert is basically ice cream, with a filling center, which comes in a chocolate shell. This sweet, rich, dessert is definitely worth every penny. I would recommend this place to everyone, and would come back often. The only downside is that it's a tad pricey. The only thing that would make this place better? A Hookah bar ! If only, if only...

This place is easy to walk right by without noticing it, but I'm glad I found it. The breakfast was so good we went back for dinner and then took deserts home because we were too full to eat them. The food here is actually better than the places I went to in Istanbul. Everything was delicious.

Originally I rated this place as 1. The food is good but the service used to be terrible. A while after my review I was contacted by their management and they gave me a 20% off coupon just to give them another chance. So I gathered with some of my friends and we went there. It was really nice to have 20% of the entire check off :) and I must admit the service is improving. I give them a 4 because so far it's only been once that the service was good. If they keep up the good work I will definitely change it to 5.

I have been to Masal many times, surprised I have never written a review, maybe because we have only had dessert here? Anyway, it's a great place to relax, they don't rush you. The tea is terrific, and they bring sugar in cubes which I love. The baklava and other Turkish pastries are also very good. Next time I am at the canal, I would like to try their sandwiches.

this is my second review of the place. I won't repeat anything I wrote in the first review. I wish I could give this place zero stars. I went again this past weekend. the service was too horrible. my food came before my water. Water was never refilled. My waitress never came by after we got everything to ask if we needed anything. Waited too long for the waitress to look at me so that i could wave her for the check. She might as well have forgotten about my presence, and that is true of the entire experience. I had to watch as half a dozen waitresses were congregated near the register and NONE looked in my direction. What's to stop me from walking out without paying? That's what I should have done. C'mon guys, organize your waiting team better.

They have a great selection of teas and various tasty desserts. They serve amazing cappuccino and Turkish coffee. The ambiance makes it one of a kind. There are all these low embroidered couches, kinda freaked me out at first, but then I sorta liked it. I think the place is kind of old looking, but maybe they can re do the floors or something, they look dirty and old. They always have European soccer on, which of course is great! This is definitely a great late night "chill spot", love coming here after dinner with some friends.

I love Masal! Masal is an authentic Turkish cafe. This is a good cozy place to catch up with close friends over Turkish tea. I didn't come here for food but I did come here for dessert. They have this mousse hazelnut cake that is absolutely divine! 5 out of 5.

Good place for desserts and coffee. It is one of the best dessert places in Brooklyn. After trying Turkish coffee at Masal it is hard to drink regular coffee. No comparison! The atmosphere is relaxing and fancy. The antique furniture adds to the ambiance. You can come here with a large group, or just with another person, there is plenty of space. Hookahs are available, should you have a need to puff something. Dessert menu selection is good, and desserts are good quality. Be careful when you drink that Turkish coffee, stuff is really strong with a heavy residue on the bottom, you may just find yourself coughing uncontrollably!

Flat meat pie is my favorite! Baked mixed cumpir is also good. My friend usually orders that. Service: AWFUL!!! I dont know whats wrong with their turkish waitresses?!?!?!!? They never smile, never ever. Dont even expect them to smile. I took my friends there once, so they liked the food, but were surprised when the turkish waitress came to our table to take our orders and was so rude to my friends. I have nothing against turkish people, but their waitresses are the worst. It makes me feel like they hate customers so much, they dont wanna explain, talk or help you choose something from the menu. Their business would be a lot better if they hired more friendly staff. If they make it like a self service restaurant, people would complain less about their service, because as long as they prepare my food on a timely manner, I will never complain about anything. It will be even better. On the other hand, russian waitresses are whole lot better, they smile, they are friendly. But they all forget that they have tables, I have to wait like 15 minutes if I wanna order anything else, and 20 minutes to ask for the check. So, when I order food, I ask them for the check too. FIVE STARS FOR THE MEAT PIE AND THEIR TURKISH TEA!!!!

Love this place. One of the few chill and mostly unpretentious joints to get tea/coffee and linger for hours, in this part of Brooklyn. The somewhat shrill review(s) below note the slow service, so be prepared for that (the servers are Russian/Turkish teens so don't expect Four Seasons Istanbul-level ceremony). The baklava and kadayif are excellent, as is the assortment of non-Turkish pastries and desserts. Get yourself a double cup of Turkish tea and kick back, alternating your gaze between the bay waters outside and the Turkish carpets and furniture indoors. Also, at some point in the evening, one or more groups of Russia/Turkish teens will come in here and loudly discuss gossip/last night, etc. Fair warning.

Don't let the name fool you, Masal does not only serve a wonderful authentic Turkish breakfast, they have plenty of various foods that are unique in their own way. Kumpir which is AMAZING is one of Masal's signature dishes. Imagine a giant baked potatoes stuffed with cheese, Russian Salad (olive) , olives, and Turkish sausage, the outside is crispy (YUM!). They also have an array of various deserts ( I'm talking a book filled with pages of deserts!). Upon entering the cafe it has a very warm and friendly feel. The owner is truly a gem and could not be a nicer person. He is almost always there to greet his customers with a smile :) I would definitely recommend this place at any time of day! It is wonderful for a Saturday morning breakfast, which my husband and I have every weekend or a visit for desert after a nice dinner. Either way Masal is wonderful :)

When you come to a place like Masal, you shouldn't expect fast service. It's one of those places where you sit outside, you enjoy the view, you enjoy your company, you enjoy the conversation you're having with your friends. If you're in a rush or expect to be waited on immediately when there are 7 other people in your section who have been there longer (and one server), you're probably a little slow (no pun intended). This is NOT a fast food place. This is NOT a get-in/get-out restaurant. The majority of the clientele - and wait staff - are not from a culture where you sit, you inhale your food and you leave. People enjoy sitting outside, smoking hookah, drinking tea. The food comes out slowly, one person at a time, in true European fashion. I always find it interesting when people come to restaurants with food, servers, clientele and mannerisms that mimick a particular country or region, and then are actually surprised when the service practices aren't that of the general American "get it done and get it done quick" variety. I will tell you this - the food here is great. The tea tastes exactly like it does in Istanbul. The baklava could have come out of an oven in Thessaloniki, I swear to it. The servers don't have to be really nice - someone on here made a comment about the female servers only being nice if you will give them a "J1 visa." Silly rabbit, men don't give women J1 visas, they give them green cards - clearly you spent your entire life under the metaphoric rock that is Manhattan. Also, it's okay to be jealous of Russian women - everyone is. Don't give Masal a bad review because you're insecure with yourself, though. That's just bad taste. As for the not so snobby restaurateurs like myself, you will like this place if you like Mediterranean/Middle Eastern/Caucasian food that is crazy affordable. You will love this place if you like sitting outside and people watching in Sheepshead Bay (or wait staff watching, because, seriously the guys and girls who work at this place are very easy on the eyes and if you're nice to them - no matter your gender - they'll be nice to you, too). I give it only 4 stars because - and this is no fault to the restaurant itself, but should be noted - depending on the evening, certain diners here can get a little annoying, a little rowdy, and a little too forward. This might be your thing, though, so, whatever. Happy tea-drinking!

Very disappointing. Spinach pie lacked flavor (other than salt and grease), baklava definitely wasn't fresh. Maybe it wouldn't have been so bad, if it wasn't for the fact that service was SLOW. Long wait to be seated, for the menu, to get food, water... The waitress seemed almost upset we were there, even though the restaurant wasn't busy. Will not be back. Turkish food can be spectacular, but not at Masal.

When the sun is out, Masal is a great place to sit outside and people watch and look at the water. During more the more chilly days of the year, its nice to sink into a cozy couch inside and have some tea. Breakfast and lunch here is tasty, IF your food arrives. Like other reviewers, I have to say the service here is pretty awful. There doesnt seem to be any organization, no bussers, and the waiters appear to be too overwhelmed to remember that you asked for a glass of water, or in my case, that you ordered a vegetable omelet, even after you flag them down and remind them. Today I gave up after over and hour of waiting for my omelet when everyone else's food had arrived and been eaten. I left sans omelet. If you do give Masal a try, the stuffed baked potato is tasty as hell. The combination of olives, corn, dressings, and whatever else they stuff into that potato makes for some great eating. The turkish omelet is also great, although it could be a little bit bigger, and come with a side (potatoes, bread, ?). Bottom line: If you come here and you're food is taking awhile, take action! Don't assume its on its way, you have to be prepared to be aggressive at this place.

I love this place and so do all of my friends. I'm Turkish myself so this place always brings me back to the memories I've had in Turkey while on vacation. Much like all the tea gardens in Turkey Masal has seating outside, which is always a great time in the summer. Every year my friends and I look forward to late summer nights at Masal. We can sit here for a good two three hours, the late hours are great! Although I haven't tried everything on the menu, I really enjoy the atmosphere of this place. I do enjoy Masals meat gozleme with the yogurt dip! This place is also great for breakfast or brunch. ONE SUGGESTION PLEASE GET THE GAME OKEY, WOULD BE GREAT TO PLAY WITH FRIENDS WHILE HERE :)

I wish I would have listened to other yelpers who complained about the service. Boy were they right! The four of us ordered dessert. One person ordered semolina. The waitress looked at him funny but didn't say anything. The 3 of us get our orders, but the person who ordered the semolina didn't get his. So we wait. Nothing happens. We finally flagged down the waitress and asked her about the order. She said they don't have semolina. We proceeded to show her that it was on the menu. She says it's called something else in Turkish. Umm, hello? The menu is in English, not Turkish! Of course it wasn't even the fact that she didn't know that one of the most common Turkish desserts was on the menu, but it was the fact that she didn't bother to follow up about the order and ask what the person meant. So much for service! Of course, she messed up my order too and brought me the wrong kind of Snapple. Now, the desserts. The best word would be "meh" -- too sweet and nothing special (I got the chocolate hazelnut mousse). I didn't finish it and that says A LOT. I guess the atmosphere is nice inside, nobody bothers you, you can sit for hours, probably because nobody is willing to serve you.

This place is okay...good Turkish tea and good Apple tea. Also, the kadayif and the exotic bomba desserts are very good, as are their waffles. However, the rest of their food? Not so much. If you're in the mood for some Turkish dessert, this place is good, but I wouldn't recommend having a meal here.

My favorite place to go for Turkish cafe. They stream REAL LIVE EUROPEAN football. Finally a place! It's on the bay, also a very favorable location. The inside is very nicely designed. I wish I could take some of the chairs and tables home! Food is Turkish and made with care.

I have lived in the area for over 15 years and have never been to this place until last night when a girlfriend of mine wanted to go to chat in a low profile place. The atmosphere and decor was very comfortable. The place looks as if it has been there for years and was never remodeled. But even though the chairs were old, they were very comfortable. I literally felt as if I was sitting in my living room having tea with a friend. I like it when a place makes me forget about time and this place succeeded in that. We ordered a pitcher of green tea and mango sorbet and everything was delicious. I was skeptical about ordering the sorbet at first because I was afraid is was going to be a block of ice with mango flavor but to my surprise it was delicious. It was the food and the atmosphere that earned this place three stars. If only the service was as good as everything else was, then this place would have gotten a full five. We had to wait at least 30 min before a server came by and that was only because I screamed out "EXCUSE ME". This makes me wonder how much longer would we have stayed in our seats without anything if I wouldn't have taken initiative to call a waiter over. But the waiter was nice. I will come back here the next time i need to get away from things and just hang out with a friend, hopefully next time my rating will go up.

Within walking distance of the Q train located in the old Lundy Brothers Restaurant building is Masal, a pleasant change of pace cafe that overlooks the canal in Sheepshead Bay. The inside of the restaurant is decorated with imported comfortable furniture from Turkey and they offer outside dining as well when the weather permits. The restaurant specializes in Turkish coffee and teas as well as Turkish style desserts but they also offer delicious authentic Turkish breakfasts. I especially recommend their omelets which are light and very tasty! While the servers are pleasant enough and it is nice that they do not rush you through your meal, the service can be a bit uneven. Also they charge for coffee and tea refills and for jam with your bread at breakfast which did not sit well with me. Still we go back quite often and I recommend Masal to anyone looking for an authentic Turkish breakfast, Turkish coffee and teas served as if you were actually in Turkey and delicious desserts in an atmosphere where you can relax and feel that you are getting away from the hustle and bustle of city life! UPDATE: I went back on a Saturday afternoon and spent several hours watching soccer games on their big screen TV and drinking Turkish coffee and tea in their extremely comfortable Turkish chairs. First was a match between two Turkish teams, then Aston Villa and Manchester City from the English Premiere league. What I loved was that no one rushed us or cared that we were only drinking coffee and tea (though the pastries looked delicious) and that the manager, Mustafa, came over to see how we liked the game! So if you are a "futbol" fan, the Masal Cafe is where you want to watch your matches!!!!!

Finally came here after cycling to Brighton Beach. They have a ton of outdoor seats and even more indoor seats. You can probably come here with a large group if you need be. It was quite bustling for a Sunday evening in Sheepshead Bay. I was quite surprised. While the reviews have said the service is slow, we actually had great service in the beginning, but as we got on to dessert, it was quite slow. i think those few wait staff have to service the entire restaurant, so if you keep that in mind, you will have a great place. I came here strictly to have Turkish tea which i love, and the kumpir. I had talked to two Turkish New Yorkers, and I said that I could never find kumpir and both of them suggested I come here. I ordered it and totally loved it - it is basically a Turkish version of a baked potato with tons of toppings. it tasted pretty well like I remember when I was in Turkey. Love love love. it is very filling and hits the spot. I imagine if I am ever going to Brighton beach again, I would come out here for this. I also think you can hang out for ages here drinking the tea. We also had the meat gozleme and a chocolate mousse dessert, but by far, the kumpir is the star. everyone was ordering it! note - there is no alcohol at this restaurant. still worth taking the trip for me!

As authentic Turkey as it can get. Light menu, great dessert and beverage menu. Nice place to get a Turkish coffee. Great interior design, not cheesy. The seats and tables are lovely and comfortable. You just know when you walk in that this place is run by Turks, and I love that! THEY BROADCAST THE BEST FOOTBALL GAMES! Something I have not come across in a while!! Love seeing Turkish guys come in with their favorite team jerseys. Cannot stress authentic enough. Unfortunately, another authentic aspect of the place is bitchy waitresses. Cold and bitchy...not very welcoming, otherwise the place would have gotten all stars from me.

I've always passed this place by, but never checked it out until Saturday night, with my friends that didnt want to go home. It's a very relaxed place. It isnt anything fancy, just a place that has nice decour, and very interesting cups- love them. Pot of tea is $12, cakes go for $12. I noticed others eating food, so they have that as well. I would say this is a place to go on a rainy day or somewhere where you want to catch up with friends.

Masal has been my favorite spot for the past few years whether it is for breakfast, lunch, dinner. I love the cozy atmosphere, especially the new redesign they did after the hurricane. Their baked potato and manti are my two absolute favorites. I also enjoy their breakfast platter and delicious cheese selection. Location is very nice, especially during the spring and summer time, you could sit outside and sip your drinks or have breakfast with your friends or family. The reason i am only giving 4 stars is because of their staff. Most of the time, waitress' are rude and snobby. This sunday morning, i came here with a friend, as usual it was pretty busy. However, we sat down and one of the waitress' gave us the menus. We have waited 20 minutes!!! To give our order. I stopped one of the waitress' to ask her if i could get some help and she said to give her 2 minutes.. No one showed up for 20 minutes to take our order. All the waitress' were busy helping the tables that had big groups and they just ignored the tables that had 2-3 people. Finally, a waitress came to take our order, but she had such an attitude i felt like she was about to throw the dishes on us. I hope the management will do something about the behavior of their staff. Otherwise, the food is very enjoyable and tasty, and i love to visit this place whenever i have a chance.

stumbled on this place and i was so sad i didnt find it sooner, during my college days. ughhh ,, Alas, Great breakfast, amazing manto (best ive had this far) and deserts are scrumptious. Kid friendly, nice view, eastern decor, staff is nice but some waitresses dont speak english that well, so ive had mixed experiences with the service, clean and comfy. but i do think its time for an upgrade on some of the sofas......;/ the sofa was too low and table was too high.

Im a fan, can I say anymore? In the summer, its great. You can sit outside, drinking your coffee or tea and smoking your hookah with you hot date. In the winter, you sit inside drinking your tea and getting a "bomba" with your girlfriend and bitching complaining about your love life.

  • Oktay I.

Didnt get a chance to sit outside cause of the cold weather... Inside decor is nice, up to Turkish standards. The sofa/seats are a little uncomfortable at first but all it does is allow you to get lazy in your chair. Took them long enough to have their own bathrooms, instead of hiking up a flight of stairs outside the cafe. Food is pretty good, nothing on the menu that wow'd me. But its cafe food so I wasn't expecting to be either. Turkish tea tasted a little funky, could've been the water. Staff was friendly and informative. They throw on the Super Lig games too which was the kicker for me :)

This was my third trip to this cafe, hoping that they would have changed but unfortunately they have not, instead they have gotten worst. Wait staff seems to have an attitute problem, slow service, pastries are good but theie Turkish Hot Tea looks like dirty dish water no color to it. I was hesitant to go there but, my family insisted on going there, I had no choice. After paying the bill, we all agreed never to go back there again.

Honestly, i really like this spot when im in the area. Decor is culturally-inspired, vibrant yet warm. Low lighting and low-med noise level. The crowd varies in age but is a mostly international mix. Local families stop by on weekends for brunch. The inside is great but if it's a nice, sunny day take an outside table if available. The fresh air and view of the piers is pleasant. There's never really any wait time, the waiters are quiet but friendly and the food has some authentic Turk inspirations. I personally love the Premium Breakfast because it's a nosher's delight: A combination of cheeses, olives, tomatoes & spreads to go with the warm, fluffy Somun is great! Wash it down with a traditional coffee or my favorite, the Turkish apple tea (no sugar needed). I definitely recommend having dessert after! The Baklava or Chocolate mousse cake are delicious. Don't be afraid to venture in, the environment is very unpretentious. You may get thrown off a bit by the menu offerings, but when in doubt either ask, or pass! I read some complaints about the service, but I've been there a dozen times and haven't had 1 negative service experience. Yes, I've had to flag them down once in a while, but not enough to make me blow up. It's a spot I return to time & time again 'just because'. Stop by for breakfast if ur in the area. Don't think I'll ever do dinner here though.

Beautiful cafe, the seating is very homey and comfortable, and it has an outdoor area along the Emmons Ave promenade, which is quite nice.

A Sheepshead Bay favorite, this is the place to go to have a cappuccino outside on a nice day or warm evening while people-watching on Emmons Avenue. They have some paninis but mostly focus on dessert and hot drinks, of which they have plenty. The food and dessert is usually good, although on my recent visit my chocolate souffle lacked the liquid center and my cappuccino was really a latte. If you sit outside, which most people like to do, expect smoke to be blown in your face by inconsiderate folks sitting nearby. And don't expect stellar service. The servers here are incredibly apathetic. Not once have I seen a waitress smile when greeting me or taking my order. Overall, 3 1/2 stars from me. If they improved the service, I'd bump it up to 4 1/2.

This place is great. What gives the place it's soul is the fact that owners are actively involved in running the place and always greet you with a hand shake and a smile as you come it. It gives one a Mediterranean feel with it's furniture, interior design and lighting. All of the aspects create a great ambiance that draws me here at least every weekend for breakfast and delicious coffe as well as wide selection of deserts. The food is simple and delicious. This place get crowded at times, but the patrons are never rowdy or loud. There is no alcohol served here. The owners like I said are great - Turkish guys. The wait staff is very polite and accommodating in its majority. The two things they can improve are service and food preparation. Coffee is at times old and I'd ask them to brew me a fresh cup. Bread is not always fresh. Consistency of some dish preparation could use improvement. All in all this is not a 5 star restaurant, but an ethnic place that is staffed owned and staffed by people from different cultures. It's a great place to bring a family or a date.

This place is great, its always SO warm in the winter and has great outdoor seating in the summer with awesome water view. But the best part is the food. Most come here for tea, but you have to try the food. It's cheap and so delicious! Breakfast all day long. Their omeletes are large. My favorite is the veggie omelete. And the Shepherd Salad is great also. I love this place, we are here at least once a week.

If you're Turkish and homesick you may love this place, but it's not the best cafe I have ever been to. I was not impressed with the service. For one thing I ordered orange juice and decided not to drink it (bottle was not opened). The waitress did not take it off the bill after I had requested it. I was appalled! Reason I got was it was already reflected on the bill and could not change it. Really! Secondly restrooms are not very conveniently located inside the cafe, but had to walk out the cafe and into a building's office restroom. Not impressed. Otherwise, menu is average.
